Testing ensures that hydrants are in full working order and verifies their flow capacity. Someone could also accidentally turn off the fire hydrant water valve and it would not be noticed until it is needed during a fire.

How do we test a fire hydrant?

In order to determine that a fire hydrant is capable of meeting fire flow requirements, Umpqua Valley Fire Services employees must open the hydrants and discharge water from the hydrant at a very high flow rate.

We will be testing:

-Static pressure: Available water pressure.

-Residual pressure: Available water pressure that is left over during flow.

-Flow pressure: Pressure that is flowing.

How does this affect the street where the testing takes place?

While fire hydrant testing is a routine maintenance procedure, it may result in temporary inconveniences. High flow rate discharge during testing disturbs sediments in the water distribution system. This often results in brown or rust-colored water. Hydrant testing may also reduce regular water pressure. Reduced water pressure should only be intermittent as the hydrants are being tested. Your regular water pressure will return to normal once the flow testing is complete.

What should you do while hydrants are being tested on your street?

• We recommend that you turn off your taps for 10 to 20 minutes while crews are testing the fire hydrants on your street and do not do laundry during that time. This should allow work crews enough time to complete the test. When work crews have left the area, turn on one of the COLD water taps in your home for a few minutes to flush out the system.
• If you detect brown or rust-colored water, do not drink the water or wash your laundry. While discolored water is not harmful to your health, it can stain laundry.

An annual test shall be conducted for a

1-1/2 hour duration. Equipment shall be fully
functional for the duration of the test.

A functional test shall be conducted on every required emergency lighting system at 30-day intervals for a minimum of 30-seconds

Portable fire extinguishers actually extinguish nearly 95 percent of all reported fires. During a three-decade research by the fire protection industry, almost 30 percent of the portable fire extinguishers in the workplace have deficiencies that could prevent them from operating appropriately. According to N.F.P.A Standard 10, portable fire extinguisher shall be serviced a minimum once per year.

Umpqua Valley Fire Services/ A-1 Fire Protection will perform inspections in accordance with the manufacturer's guidelines, N.F.P.A Standard 10, and the local fire prevention authority having Jurisdiction. Annual inspection procedures of fire extinguishers include:

Fire Sprinkler systems will be inspected in accordance with the manufacturers' guidelines, N.F.P.A Standard 25, and the local fire prevention authority. Umpqua Valley Fire Services/ A-1 Fire Protection will conduct monthly, quarterly or annually inspections as required by local the local fire prevention authority.

• Inspection of the fire department connections(s) to ensure caps/plugs are in place, coupling/swivels are not damaged. Gaskets are present, signs are in place and no obstruction or damage is present.
• Inspect the riser for any water leaks, ensure bracing is intact, alarm valves are in proper position and no obstructions or damage is present.
• Inspect gauges for damage; ensure the three-way test valve is present and open.
• Inspect, test water, flow alarm and bell. For any visual obstructions and note if the fire sprinkler system being monitored.
• Inspect control valves are secure, no leaks, the open/shut indicators are working, no obstructions or damage is present.
• Inspect fire sprinkler heads for leaks, paint, corrosion and flow obstruction. Check for required sprinkler heads and sprinkler wrench are on site.
• Inspect main drain, test for static pressure, residual pressure -All defects will be noted, brought to your attention with a recommendation how to make it compliant and cost estimate for repairs.

Kitchen fire suppression systems will be inspected in accordance with N.F.P.A Standard 96, 17A, manufacturers' guidelines, and local fire prevention authority. Umpqua Valley Fire Services/ A-1 Fire Protection will conduct semi-annual inspections of the kitchen fire suppression system and will include:

• Inspect for visible signs that the system has been fired, tampered with or pressure leaked down
• Installation of new currently dated fusible links
• Clean and de-grease the nozzles in the hood and over appliances
• Check cylinders condition and verify last hydrostatic test dates on cylinder
• Inspect the pipe and conduit to ensure it is secure
• Inspect linkage cable for fraying
• Inspect the regulator test date
• Inspect pull station
• Check chemical type and quantity
• Inspect gas valve operation and gas shutdown as required
• Weigh activation cartridges as necessary or replace as required
• Full function test of system to verify electric shutdown operation
• Dry test system for automatic operation
• Dry test system with manual release at control panel and remote pull station
• Check for correct type of portable extinguisher in Kitchen area (K class) and verify it has been properly inspected
• Install certification indicating compliance
• UL-300 Compliant Review
• All defects will be noted, brought to your attention with a recommendation how to make it compliant and cost estimate for repairs.
